What is Orthognathic Surgery?

Orthodontic surgery or corrective jaw surgery is a procedure performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to move the top or bottom jaw so that the teeth meet correctly.

Braces and Invisalign aligners are effective for treating a wide range of tooth and bite misalignments, but when orthodontic issues stem from the positioning of the jaws rather than the teeth, orthognathic surgery may also be necessary.

Orthognathic surgery not only helps create a more symmetrical smile but can also significantly improve a patient's ability to breathe, chew, and speak.

When performed in conjunction with orthodontic treatments like braces or Invisalign, orthognathic surgery can provide patients with a smile that functions correctly and looks great.

The Surgical Orthodontic Process

Surgical orthodontics is a collaborative process that combines the skills and expertise of your general dentist, orthodontist, and oral surgeon to address complex jaw irregularities and bite issues.

To begin, your general dentist will work with you to ensure that your teeth, gums and jaw are in tip-top condition. Then your orthodontist can provide you with personalized care to get your teeth into their optimal positions before surgery.

Next, your oral and maxillofacial surgeon performs a procedure to move your jaws into the desired position. Once your jaw has healed, your orthodontist will create a second treatment plan to fine-tune the alignment of your teeth and bite, leaving you with a smile that is healthier and more symmetrical.

From start to finish, the surgical orthodontic process may take up to two or three years to complete.

Benefits of Surgical Orthodontics

Surgical orthodontics combines comprehensive orthodontic treatment with corrective jaw surgery to address significant jaw discrepancies and bite misalignment.

By coordinating braces treatment with orthognathic (jaw) surgery, both the teeth and underlying jaw structure can be repositioned to improve overall balance and function.

This approach may be recommended for patients with severe overbites, underbites, open bites, facial asymmetry, TMJ-related concerns, traumatic jaw injuries, or improper jaw development.

In certain cases, surgical orthodontics may also be considered as part of a treatment plan for airway-related problems such as obstructive sleep apnea.
